Spelt (Spelz) Sm "Dinkel" per. Wortschatz reg. (8. Jh.), mhd. spelte, spelze f., ahd. spelta, spelza f., as. spelta f Entlehnung. Wie ae. spelt entlehnt aus l. spelta f. Dieses scheint seinerseits ein Lehnwort aus dem Vorgänger von Spelze "Getreidehülse" zu sein (überliefert ist eine Entlehnung aus dem Pannonischen - im Gebiet der Pannonier saßen aber um das 5. Jh., das für die Entlehnung in Frage kommt, Sueben und Langobarden). Das Benennungsmotiv hätte in diesem Fall der Umstand abgegeben, daß beim Dinkel die Spelzen nicht durch das Dreschen abfallen, sondern an den Körnern bleiben. Aber die Einzelheiten bleiben unklar, und eine Entlehnung des lateinischen Wortes aus einer unbekannten Sprache ist nicht ausgeschlossen. Oder mit unregelmäßiger Lautentwicklung zu l. spiculum "Spitze, Stachel" ?
